Named Fulton Homes Teacher of the Week

Denise Murphy brings unique themes and approaches to her students

Anyone walking into Denise Murphy's Liberty Elementary classroom in Buckeye may think they've been transported back in time. Murphy's entire classroom is decorated with a 1970s hippie theme. Far out!

While her classroom is unique, so is her teaching approach. Murphy has been known to preside over indoor snowball fights, working fun and play into her lesson plans. Now, Murphy is being recognized for her dedication to teaching by being named the latest winner of the Fulton Homes Teacher of the Week award. Amber Riggs, who nominated Murphy for the honor, said her son's educator is "the grooviest teacher ever."

For the 15th consecutive year Fulton Homes is recognizing Phoenix Valley school teachers through the Teacher of the Week program. Throughout the school year the program showcases teachers who inspire their students. Both students and parents can nominate their favorite educator each week for that teacher's chance to win $300 from Fulton Homes and other prizes. The chosen educator will be announced each Friday from 6:20 to 7:20 a.m. on KNIX's Ben and Matt in the Morning Show, heard at 102.5 FM. Students and parents can nominate their favorite teacher each week by visiting www.knixcountry.com, and submitting a brief form describing why their teacher deserves the title.

In May a 'Teacher of the Year' will be chosen from the list of weekly winners, and they will be presented with a $1,000 check at a ceremony honoring all the weekly winners. Based on the entries submitted, a panel of judges will select a winner and the teacher will be announced at the May banquet.

"She gets to know these kids on the most personal level," Riggs wrote of Murphy. "My son struggles staying focused, but in her classroom he is directed. The rules are simple, consequences are known ahead of time, and she is consistent. She also actively looks for when the kids are behaving properly and rewards them. That skill alone makes her priceless."

"We are honored to recognize Denise Murphy as our latest Teacher of the Week winner," said Fulton Homes CEO Doug Fulton. "She is to be commended for making learning both unique and fun for her students."
