The Popularity of Super Garages

The garage, as we know it, has come a long way since it debuted in a Sears Roebuck & Company catalog back in 1908. The concept for extra storage and a safe location to park the family car grew in popularity for decades. By the 1950's a two-car garage became standard in most homes across the country, and today, more than 17 percent of all new builds have a three-car garage. At Fulton Homes, many of our floor plans include that option, but we've taken the trend one step further to include options for four and five-car-tandem garages in some models.

With up to almost 1,100 square feet of additional space, these expansive garages are oftentimes referred to as "Super Garages" – and we make them options inside several floorplans in five communities across the Valley.

Of course, not all homeowners have five cars, but there are plenty of good reasons to seek out this type of space in a new home. One exciting trend homebuilders are seeing more frequently is the transformation of garages into creative spaces. Aside from the old methods of using the garage as a workplace for car repairs and carpentry, the area can also work well for craftspeople, hobbyists and musicians. Many people are even converting garages into complete living spaces or Man Caves/She Shed areas.

In Surprise, at Sonoma Coast at Escalante, buyers can choose from either the Pelican Bay Super Garage floorplans. Each home can be customized for new buyers with between three to five bedrooms, and each model also comes with an option for a loft space upstairs. Families with multiple children may opt for the loft to utilize the area as a game room or movie room. And with the Super Garage, a preteen's newfound love for the drums can work its way into a soundproof area built into the family's five-car garage.

On the other side of town, the Sonoma Coast at Promenade in San Tan Valley also offers several options for a Super Garage. The Seaside Super Garage boasts more than a thousand square feet of space in its four-car garage model. And while most homeowners may not fill the space with cars, some will have boats, ATV's, motorbikes, kayaks, and other large recreational items that take up room. A four or five-car garage is the perfect solution for safely storing these items without the need for an outdoor shed or storage unit.

Finally, for families with children of all ages, there is plenty of room in the garage to allocate space for a playroom. Once the flooring is upgraded from concrete to epoxy or tile, this is a great opportunity to add air-hockey, foosball, billiards, ping pong, Pop-a-Shot, and/or pinball machines. With the option to have so many activates under one roof, family bonding time will never be the same.
