Sustainable and Healthy Homes

Tempe-based home builder has long term commitment to EPA's Energy Star and Indoor airPLUS Programs

Fulton Homes has earned sole recognition by the EPA for their industry leading dedication to EPA standards for homebuilders. Not only has Fulton Homes has won the Indoor airPLUS Leader Award for healthier indoor air the past three years, but they have also won the EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year Award for the past 3 years. They are the only builder in the country to do so.

Vice President of Operations Dennis Webb has spearheaded both of these EPA programs at the builder while acting as an advocate for their buyers. As Webb has seen firsthand, the EPA Energy Star "Certified Homes Program," which also includes the Indoor airPLUS standards, is not difficult to meet, but requires diligence by the homebuilder. "It's not very much of an added expense to meet these requirements," Webb said, "but at Fulton, we are different than other builders because we don't see the EPA standards as a burden. If we put ourselves in the shoes of the buyers, it's really an easy choice to make. We all want sustainable and healthy homes to live in, so that's exactly what Fulton Homes builds."

Energy Star's "Energy Efficient Home" standards require homes to be well sealed off from the elements, which cuts down drastically on energy consumption. According to the EPA, it's anywhere between 15%-30%. In addition, to maintain industry leading standards of indoor air quality, Fulton Homes is one of only 3% of builders in the U.S. who participate in Indoor airPLUS. Conversely, 90% of builders in the U.S. participate in the Energy Efficient Home standards.

Webb sees air quality standards getting more attention from buyers, but builders haven't caught up. It's a matter of educating the buyer on the data for Webb and Fulton Homes. According to the EPA, indoor air quality can be much lower outdoor air, especially if air quality standards aren't a priority for the builder. "When home buyers are aware of the options for higher air quality, they almost invariably choose the healthy air home," Webb said. "That's what we'd choose for our own families, so that's what we give to our buyers."
