Pool Fence to Foster Care Grandparents

Tempe Homebuilder's program returns for 14th consecutive year

As Spring returns, so does the Fulton Homes Fence Patrol program for the 14th consecutive year.

The Tempe-based homebuilder will provide 15 free pool fences for Valley residents in need. Fence Patrol highlights the importance of always watching children around water, and acts as a reminder that water emergencies can happen in seconds.

The first pool fence, installed Tuesday, April 26, has been awarded to Tracie Wadella of Glendale. Wadella and her husband never planned on being foster care grandparents. Eight months ago the Glendale couple took in Averitt, their 18-month-old grandson, after Child Protective Services removed the child from his parents' home after he sustained injuries while alone with his father.

The Wadella's swimming pool does not have a protective fence. The couple is concerned Averitt could venture out of the house and fall into the pool.

"Fulton Homes is happy to help make the Wadella Family safer by providing this pool fence," said Doug Fulton, CEO of Fulton Homes. "But, a fence is only a barrier. Watching children around water, teaching them to swim and having an adult who knows how to preform CPR are all critical for protection against drowning and near drowning accidents. Drowning is a sad reality in Arizona, and we want to continue doing everything we can to prevent tragedies from occurring."

"Winning this pool fence has been a great gift for us," Wadella says. "Due to these circumstances, we now find ourselves financially short each month. It just takes one more priority off our list. We are so very grateful."
