Gilbert Mother Facing Major Surgery Wins

Tempe homebuilder's program making families safer around water

The Fulton Homes Fence Patrol program has chosen a Gilbert mother of two as its second recipient of a free pool fence through its annual Fence Patrol program. The Tempe-based homebuilder will provide 15 free pool fences for Valley residents in need. Fence Patrol, now in its 14th consecutive year, highlights the importance of always watching children around water, and acts as a reminder that water emergencies can happen in seconds.

Andrea McMullen has enough to be concerned about these days. The Gilbert mother of a 1- and 3-year-old is scheduled to have major surgery soon. With the high medical deductibles, McMullen and her husband have no extra money to purchase and install a protective pool fence that would keep their children and playmates safer around the pool. Fulton Homes has stepped in to help the McMullens by providing a new pool fence, which will be installed Tuesday morning.

"Fulton Homes is happy to help Andrea and her family be safer by providing this pool fence," said Doug Fulton, CEO of Fulton Homes. "But, a fence is only a barrier. Watching children around water, teaching them to swim and having an adult who knows how to preform CPR are all critical for protection against drowning and near drowning accidents. Drowning is a sad reality in Arizona, and we want to continue doing everything we can to prevent tragedies from occurring."

"We never win anything, so this was such a wonderful surprise," McMullen said. "Sometimes life's list of things to do and pay for adds up. It's great to receive the helping hand of Fulton Homes."

McMullen's mother, Candice Armstrong, nominated her daughter for the fence, writing that Andrea and her son-in-law "continuously sacrifice and go without to help friends and family when they need assistance."
