Scottsdale Educator Honored as Fulton Homes "Teacher of the Week"
Penny Cimo Receives Award for Creating Musical Talent at Foothills Academy.
A Scottsdale math teacher is using the arts to help students learn. Penny Cimo teaches at Foothills Academy in Scottsdale. She noticed the school was missing music and art classes. So, Cimo created a vocal club and art classes to give the students a different learning opportunity. Her efforts have been recognized by Fulton Homes, who have elected her as their "Teacher of the Week" winner.
Cimo was nominated by Abby Walker, a student who says she was truly enriched by the intellectual and musically gifted teacher. "I love going to her class because she incorporates my passions, music and art," Walker said.
"Penny Cimo has created a well-rounded education for her students by adding music and art classes to the curriculum." Doug Fulton, CEO of Fulton Homes said. "It is ingenuity and creativity likes hers that makes us proud to give her this award."
According to the National Governors Association, the arts can provide effective learning opportunities to students that produce increased academic performance, reduced absence and better skill-building. The enthusiasm and personal growth students receive in Cimo's classes led Walker to her teacher to coach her in piano outside of school. Walker explains Ms. Cimo's evident passion for teaching, along with her calming and funny personality makes piano classes enjoyable. "She is a wonderful person and truly deserves to win this contest," Walker added.
