'Self Containment Class' Educator Named

Verrado Elementary's Tammi Hausman creates strong bonds with students

It takes a very special teacher to lead the Self Containment Class at Verrado Elementary School. The special class was created for children experiencing various behavioral challenges. But teacher Tammi Hausman has created a strong bond with her 17 students who are all managing anger, anxiety, behavioral and emotional problems.

Now, Hausman is being recognized for her dedication to her work. Meghan Walls, a mother of one of Hausman's students, nominated her for the Fulton Homes' Teacher of the Week award. This week, Hausman learned she had been named the program's latest winner.

For the 15th consecutive year Fulton Homes is recognizing Phoenix Valley school teachers through the Teacher of the Week program. Throughout the school year the program showcases teachers who inspire their students. Both students and parents can nominate their favorite educator each week for that teacher's chance to win $300 from Fulton Homes and other prizes. The chosen educator will be announced each Friday from 6:20 to 7:20 a.m. on KNIX's Ben and Matt in the Morning Show, heard at 102.5 FM. Students and parents can nominate their favorite teacher each week by visiting www.knixcountry.com, and submitting a brief form describing why their teacher deserves the title.

In May a 'Teacher of the Year' will be chosen from the list of weekly winners, and they will be presented with a $1,000 check at a ceremony honoring all the weekly winners. Based on the entries submitted, a panel of judges will select a winner and the teacher will be announced at the May banquet.

"My son had a lot of anxiety, and was dealing with the loss of his father," Walls said in the nomination letter. "Tammi has helped him blossom into a happy, social child now. She goes above and beyond for all of her children, never asking for anything in return."

"The extraordinary work Tammi Hausman does each day in the classroom is one of the reasons we started the Teacher of the Week program years ago," said Fulton Homes CEO Doug Fulton. "We are happy to honor this wonderful, inspiring teacher with this award."
